General guidelines to eLibrary services

  • The eLibrary materials are meant for private use. Commercial use and modification of the services is prohibited.
  • Using, borrowing, and making reservations in the services is free of charge.
  • Please use the latest versions of applications and browsers updated to the latest version.
  • On mobile, use the app first, if available.
  • If necessary, log in with your library card number or with your library card number and PIN.
  • Some services are only available for use in libraries, some services have remote access.
  • The material you use, borrow and reserve in the services will not appear in the web library.

Ellibs ebooks

  • Remote access with your library card number and PIN.
  • Select Pohjoisen eKirjasto as your library.
  • The loan period is 7 or 14 days.
  • You can have max. 5 loans and 7 reservations simultaneously.
  • Access through the Ellibs app, browser or reader software.

Instructions for Ellibs  


Ellibs e-book service   contains a selection of e-books and e-audiobooks mainly in Finnish, but also a small collection in other languages. The collection includes fiction, nonfiction, guide books, and children’s and young adult literature.

You need a device and an internet connection to access the books in the collection. If you download the material on your device, you can read it also offline. If you borrow a book, the loan is entered only in the Ellibs service and not, for instance, in your OUTI library loans. The material you borrowed can be viewed both with the app and the browser.

The use of the service, borrowing and reserving books is free.

Use the latest version of any software, application or browser. Using the app on mobile devices is recommended. However, it is possible to access Ellibs through the default browser in your device.

General

  • You can browse e-books and e-audiobooks on the Collection page without logging in. You can filter your search, for example by language or availability. You can search for material by title, author or keywords, or by browsing the categories.
  • To borrow, tap the thumbnail of the book’s cover and then tap Borrow on the book information page. You can have the book on loan for either 7 or 14 days. The loans cannot be renewed, but you can borrow the same book again if the book is not reserved for someone else.
  • Your loans and reservations are under Bookshelf or My Bookshelf.
  • You can change the background colour, text size and font in the e-book reader view.
  • The service automatically remembers where you stopped reading or listening previously. You can also add your own bookmarks.
  • In the e-audiobook listening view, you can rewind and wind the book forward, select chapters, set a sleep timer or adjust the playback speed.
  • You can reserve books currently on loan. Reserve a book by tapping the thumbnail of the book’s cover and then tap Reserve. When making a reservation, provide your e-mail address to be notified when the book is available. The loan period starts immediately once the previous reader returns the book. You can check your reservations from My Bookshelf. If you want to keep your reservation but postpone the loan for a more convenient time, you can lock your position in the reservation queue for the time being. If you receive no messages about book availability, check your spam folder.
  • The loans will be returned automatically in the end of your loan period. You can return them earlier through your Bookshelf page. On the app, tap the book’s cover and then select Return book.

Using the Ellibs mobile application

  • Load the free Ellibs app from your device’s application store and open it.
  • Select Pohjoisen eKirjasto as your library.
  • Log in with your library card number and PIN.
  • The first time you log in, the service will request your birth year and acceptance of the privacy statement. Then, tap Register.
  • On the My Settings page you can choose the notifications you would like to receive from the app. If you would like to receive notifications, allow them also on your smartphone settings.
  • When using the app, e-books and e-audiobooks are downloaded to your device to be read offline, too.

Browser use

  • You may also use a browser on your computer or mobile device if you are online and the browser is up to date.
  • For reading, we recommend Firefox, Chrome or Safari browsers respectively, depending on your device.
  • Open the service by tapping the eLibrary link on the page ellibslibrary.com/pek  , your library will automatically be Pohjoisen eKirjasto.
  • Log in using your library card number and PIN.
  • The first time you log in, the service will request your birth year and acceptance of the privacy statement. Next, choose Register.
  • On your browser, the e-books will open to the reader view, and e-audiobooks will open to the player view. No other software is required.

Download to device

  • You can also download books on your device to access them offline.
  • You will need an e-book reader software and an Adobe ID account, which you can create on Adobe Account. Adobe ID is required due to the digital protection methods used for e-books.
  • Adobe Digital Editions can be used as the e-book reader software. When you download an e-book to your device, it is accessible for the selected loan period.

OverDrive eLibrary   provides e-books and e-audiobooks mainly in English. A small collection of fiction in Finnish is also included.

You need a device and an internet connection to access the books in the collection. If you download the material on your device, you can read it also offline. If you borrow a book, the loan is entered only in the OverDrive service and not, for instance, in your OUTI library loans. The material you borrowed can be viewed both with the app and the browser.

The use of service, borrowing and reserving books is free.

Use the latest version of any software, application or browser. Using the app on mobile devices is recommended. However, it is possible to access OverDrive through the default browser in your device.

General

  • You can browse e-books and e-audiobooks on the Library page without logging in.
  • Menu is at the top of the view. By tapping More Options, you can search for books by topic, format or acquisition date. You can browse the collection by category or search for a specific title or author.
  • To borrow, tap on the thumbnail of the book’s cover and then tap Borrow on the book information page. You can have the book on loan for either 7 or 14 days.
  • You can find your loans and reservations in the browser view by tapping the icon of three books or My Account; tap Shelf in the application.
  • A loan can be renewed three days before its expiration date if it is not on hold.
  • You can change the background colour, text size and font in the e-book reader view by selecting Reading Settings in the top right-hand corner.

  • You can reserve books currently on loan. Reserve a book by first tapping the book’s cover thumbnail and then Place Hold. When making a reservation, provide your e-mail address to be notified when the book is available. The loan period starts immediately once the previous reader returns the book. You can check your reservations in Holds under My Bookshelf. If you want to keep your reservation but postpone the loan for a more convenient time, you can lock your position in the reservation queue for the time being.
  • You need to manually borrow your available holds. When a hold becomes available for you, you'll receive an email and a notification in your library's OverDrive collection. You have three days to react to the notification.
    Borrow
    Delivered later: Current copy will go for the next person in line but you stay at the front of the wait list. You can choose the earliest date you'd like the title to be delivered, after that you'll get a copy when the next person returns it.
    Cancel
    If you take no action to the notification in three days, the "delivered after seven days" option will be automatically applied. If you take no action a second time, your hold will be cancelled.
  • The loans will be returned automatically at the end of your loan period. You can return them earlier through My Bookshelf > Loans. Tap Return under the book you wish to return. If you are using the app, tap Manage Loan and then Return Early.
  • In Settings, you can choose the default loan period and save your loan history.

Using the Libby mobile app

  • The application is in English.
  • Download the free Libby app from the application store and open it.
  • Select Pohjoisen eKirjasto (Northern eLibrary) as your library.
  • Then log in the application with your library card number (Syötä kirjastokortin numerosi) and PIN (Syötä salanumerosi).
  • When using the app, e-books and e-audiobooks can be downloaded to your device so you can also read them offline. You can manage the download options in Settings.
  • In the top right-hand corner Libby menu, you can check your reservation and downloading settings, add other library cards to the Libby app, or change your card depending on the library you use.

Browser use

  • You may also use a browser on your computer or mobile device, if you are online and the browser is up to date.
  • For reading, we recommend Firefox, Chrome or Safari browsers respectively, depending on your device.
  • Open the service by the eLibrary link pek.overdrive.com/   and your library will automatically be Pohjoisen eKirjasto.
  • You can choose English from the language menu on the top of the page.
  • Log in using your library card number and PIN.
  • On your browser, the e-books will open to the reader view, and e-audiobooks will open to the player view. No other software is required.

Download to device

  • You can also download books on your device to access them offline.
  • You will need an e-book reader software and an Adobe ID account, which you can create on Adobe Account. Adobe ID is required due to the digital protection methods used for e-books.
  • Adobe Digital Editions can be used as the e-book reader software. When you download an e-book to your device, it is accessible for the selected loan period.
  • To listen to a downloaded audiobook, you need to download and install a listening software from the Rakuten OverDrive website. You will receive the link when you start downloading an audiobook. If you wish to download material on your mobile device, use Libby application.
  • When you click the Download button, you will first receive a device compatibility notice you need to confirm. After confirmation, the book file will start downloading. If you use a reader software for the first time, you are required to register using the Adobe ID you created earlier. Some of the e-books are available both in EPUB and PDF formats. EPUB is the preferred format as it is the most reliable one regardless of the device or reader software.
  • Downloaded books will be automatically returned at the end of their loan period. If you return the book earlier, the return takes place on the reader software, not in the eLibrary or OverDrive website.

ePress and eMagz

  • Accessible on library public computers without logging in
  • Accessible through the library Wi-Fi on your own device without logging in
  • Remote access for eMagz outside the library with your library card number and PIN
  • Browser use

ePress   contains digital editions of Finnish newspapers and eMagz   contains digital editions of Finnish magazines. The newspapers and magazines are available immediately after publication. You may have to wait for the magazine or newspaper to open in the browser if another person is currently reading it. If all magazine licenses are currently in use in eMagz, you can see your number in the queue. There is also an estimate of the average waiting time over the magazine if you are using eMagz outside the library. The service can be accessed only on library public computers and your own device through the library network. You can use eMagz also outside the library. Fewer magazines are available through remote use than when accessing the eMagz service through the library Wi-Fi or customer computers.

Use

  • Open the service by clicking the eLibrary link. Remote access for eMagz has its own link which requires a login  . Choose your own library/library network and login with your library card number and PIN.
  • You can change the language by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking the flag (under Vaihda kieli).
  • On the front page, you can see some of the latest issues of the magazines or newspapers in the service.
  • Click the cover thumbnail of the newspaper or magazine you want to read. It will open into the reader view.
  • In the reader view, you can search the newspaper or magazine, browse it in different ways and print out pages. Menu can be found from from the top left corner.
  • You can browse older issues by clicking Open Archive below the thumbnail. Archives of the magazine or newspaper in question are organized by month.
  • Other newspapers and magazines can be read by choosing one in the drop-down menu on the top left-hand corner on the front page, or by entering the name in the lookup field.
  • The advanced search is opened by the + symbol next to the lookup field. On the search page you can search the contents of the newspaper and magazines. The search can be filtered by timeline, geographically in the ePress service, by topics and themes in the eMagz service or by selecting only certain newspapers and magazines.

PressReader Newspaper and Magazine Service

  • Available on the library public computers without logging in

PressReader service   contains over 7,000 newspapers and magazines from 120 countries in more than 60 languages. You can browse the newspapers and magazines using the library Wi-Fi on a library computer or the PressReader application. The PressReader newspaper and magazine collection changes throughout the year, for instance when publishers decide to remove their publication from the service. The library is not notified of such changes and cannot the changes in the collection. Pages and articles of newspapers and magazines can be printed out. Articles can be machine translated to some languages and listened to as machine-read audio.

Browser use

  • Open the service by clicking the eLibrary remote use link. Select ‘Sign In’ in the top right-hand corner. Select the ‘Library or Group’ button and search for your library network: Joki, Kainet, OUTI, Sotkamo or Rovaniemi City Library. Log in using your library card number and PIN. You can opt out from creating a PressReader account by selecting ‘Cancel’ when the site asks you to register.
  • Remote use of the service is available for 30 days before a new login is required.
  • You can browse the newspaper and magazine collection by clicking the ‘Select Publication’ button.
  • You can browse newspapers and magazines by country, language, category or publication type, or search by newspaper or magazine title.
  • Select a newspaper or magazine cover to read it.
  • You can return to the magazine and newspaper selection by selecting ‘Catalog’ from the top left menu.

Application use

  • Download the free PressReader application on your mobile device from the application store. If you have downloaded the application earlier, make sure it is updated to the latest version.
  • Open the PressReader app and select ‘Sign In’ from the menu. Select the ‘Library or Group’ button and search for your library network: Joki, Kainet, OUTI, Sotkamo or Rovaniemi City Library. Log in using your library card number and PIN.
  • The app asks you to register an account when you use it for the first time. You can opt out by selecting ‘Cancel’.
  • You can browse the selection, read newspapers and magazines and download them on your device. The newspaper or magazine is automatically downloaded on your mobile device when you open it. Downloads can be removed through the ‘Downloaded’ menu.
  • Remote use of the service is available for 30 days before a new login is required.

Rockway Musical Instrument Teaching

  • Remote access with your library card number and PIN

  • Browser use

Rockway   is a Finnish online service where you can learn to play instruments, to sing and to record by watching online video courses. All the courses are in Finnish. The courses are suitable for independent studying for music enthusiasts of all competence levels and ages. The service provides 50 video courses of different topics, from playing guitar to singing techniques. Courses are available for the following topics: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, singing, recording, ukulele, and harmonica. The singing courses are based on the renowned Complete Vocal Technique theory. Each course is divided into comprehensive video lessons. Some of the courses come with printable sheet music. You have also a metronome and tuner at your disposal and you can also record your performances.

Rockway online courses are accessible with the most common browsers that are up to date. You can watch the courses on a computer, tablet or smartphone but the devices (the metronome, tuner and recording) are available only when using a computer. You must be online to access the service. The network connection must be more than 2 Mb/s for the videos to load properly. Your computer or mobile device should be connected to amplifiers and quality loudspeakers to get the best sound quality.

Use

  • Open the service from the link: Rockway  
  • Log in using your library card number and PIN by clicking Kirjaudu (Log in).
  • Each course can be accessed by 1–3 borrowers simultaneously (depending on the course).
  • Borrow a course by clicking Lainaa (Borrow). The first time you borrow course material, register by entering your name and email address on the register form. The information is required for notifications of arrival or reservations and expiry of loan periods to be sent to you.
  • You can view the courses you have on loan in Omat kurssit (My Courses).
  • The loan period for the courses is 14 days.
  • The course will be returned automatically once the loan period expires.
  • If the course you are interested in is already borrowed, you can reserve it by clicking Lisää itsesi jonoon (Add yourself to the queue).
  • If you no longer need a course you have borrowed, please return it before the due date so that others will be able to start studying.
  • You can log out by clicking Takaisin (Back) on the bottom left hand corner.

Naxos Music Library

  • Remote access by using your library card number
  • Browser use on computer or mobile device
  • An application is also available

Naxos Music Library   is music listening service acquired by the library. The collection contains more than 140,000 CDs of classical music and more than 17,000 CDs of jazz music.

Use

  • Open the service from the link: Naxos Music Library  
  • Log in using your library card number.
  • Once logged in, the selection of featured new releases will open. Menus contain directories of music genres, performers, and composers, ready-made play lists and different kinds of additional material. You can use keywords to search for a music piece, composer or performer.
  • Naxos Music Services are streaming services, i.e., you can listen to the music online but not save it. You need an internet connection throughout to listen to the music.
  • The listening time is not limited, but there cannot be more simultaneous listeners online than the number of licences acquired by the library.

You must be online to access the service. The browser-based service is available for PC and Mac OS X devices and computers; for iOS and Android mobile devices you can get an application from the app store. However, you need to create an account on the Naxos website in order to start using the app.

Medici.tv

  • Streaming service with recordings and live broadcasts of concerts, operas and ballets, as well as documentaries and teaching materials.
  • Available for browsers, requires a constant internet connection.
  • The website is available in four languages: English, French, Spanish and Russian.
  • Login with your library card number and PIN.
  • Unlimited simultaneous use.

Use with a browser:

  • Open the service from the link: Medici.tv  
  • Log in with your library card number and PIN.
  • For example, you can search for videos by title, artist, or composer, or browse content by genre.
  • In the calendar section, you can see the schedule for new content and upcoming live performances.

Cineast Movie Service

  • Movie streaming service
  • Available for use on a browser or the app, requires a constant internet connection
  • Supports Chromecast on the Chrome browser on all platforms
  • Remote access with your library card number and PIN
  • The loan period is 48 hours
  • Maximum of 6 loans per month

Use

  • Open the service through the link: Cineast  
  • Choose your library network or library from the drop down menu. Select continue and you can now browse the selection front page.
  • Select the movie name or cover to see the full information.
  • Log in with your library card number and PIN and select ‘Play movie!‘
  • You can skip creating an account by selecting ‘Skip‘.
  • Start watching the movie. The number of films you have left to watch is shown above the movie player.
  • The loan period for movies is 48 hours. During that period, you can freely wind forward and rewind the film or watch it as many times as you like. You can also pause, have breaks and change the device before the film is finished. For instance, you can start watching a film on your mobile device and finish watching it on your computer.
  • Please note that the service does not currently provide subtitles in English.
